Plenty of cEDH decks exist that want to have a high life total to spend on broken effects, from Ad Nauseam to Necropotence, and as such giving them more life to spend really is a trade-off worth thinking about

Because life gain is so relatively potent you can pull back a lot of lost tempo against more agro decks and swing the tide with one card even when things look quite bleak
